The origin of the horseshoe crab has been pushed back by at least 100 million years with the discovery of two nearly complete fossil specimens in Canada.

According to a report in Live Science, this finding has revealed a new genus of horseshoe crab called Lunataspis aurora, which roamed along the shorelines of the planet half a billion years ago.

News from the Palynology Group

Group Meeting 2009

Following on from last year’s successful meeting at the University of Birmingham, this year’s Palynology Group meeting will be at the Natural History Museum in London. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 13th May, and our local hosts will be Dr. Susanne Feist-Burkhardt and the team of palynologists of the NHM Palaeontology Department.

MSc Program Scholarships- Renewable Energy in Central and Eastern Europe

OMV, Central Europe’s leading oil and gas company, deals in context of research projects with improvements in energy efficiency, greenhouse gas minimisation as well as economical use of biogenous fuels. Furthermore OMV awards two scholarships to the outstanding MSc Program “Renewable Energy in Central and Eastern Europe” to participants from Hungary and Slovakia. These two grants to participants from Hungary and Slovakia in the amount of EUR 13,000 each will be awarded by a jury. The participation of the scholarship holder is EUR 4,500. Any recourse of law is excluded. The winner will be informed.

کشف گونه جدیدی از جنس منقرض شده Laonastes در سالهای اخیر باعث شگفتی دانشمندان گردید. این جونده سنجاب مانند كه در لائوس كشف شده است، تنها باقی مانده گروهی از جوندگان به شمار می رود كه در حدود ۱۱ میلیون سال پیش از بین رفته اند. جالبتر است بدانیم که این نمونه گونه جدیدی نیست بلکه یک فسیل زنده است.

دایناسورها بین ۶۵ تا ۲۳۰ میلیون سال پیش بر روی زمین زندگی می‌‌کردند.

دایناسورها برخلاف دیگر خزندگان نظیر مارمولکها، پاهای بلند و کشیده‌ای داشتند که آنها را قادرمی ساخت بدن خود را از سطح زمین بالا نگه‌دارند. آنها به سهولت بر روی زمین حرکت می‌‌کردند و برخی نبز به خوبی می‌‌دویدند. دایناسورها گونه‌های متنوعی از قبیل، گیاه خواران غول پیکر به طول 27 متر (90 پا)و گوشتخواران سریع السیرکه بعضا" کوتاه تر از 5/1 متر (5 پا) بودند را شامل می‌‌شدند.
