International Association of Sedimentologists meeting
We would like to invite you to submit your contributions to the following session at the forthcoming International Association of Sedimentologists meeting in Manchester (September 2–5, 2013):
Session T1.1—Mudstones: source, transport, deposition, and diagenesis
Chairs: Howard A. Armstrong (University of Durham, UK), Harry Shaw (Imperial College London, UK), Kevin G. Taylor (University of Manchester, UK), and João Trabucho-Alexandre (University of Durham, UK)
Session description:
Sedimentary research is usually driven by economic reasons. For a long time, mudstones were considered the rock from which petroleum has migrated away and not the lucrative (and therefore interesting) reservoir rock where hydrocarbons accumulated. In recent years, however, the possibility of extracting hydrocarbons economically from mudstones has fueled an expansion of research. Despite this renewed interest in the geology of shale, several practical problems render the study of shale a challenging one. Mudstones are typically not well exposed in the field, their composition and texture cannot be studied easily, and sedimentary structures are difficult to see. Recent improvements in analytical and interpretative techniques in mudstone research are producing a growing body of new results from across many disciplines. The aim of this session is to stimulate cross-disciplinary exchange of new ideas and views arising from the geochemical, sedimentological, stratigraphical, and paleontological study of mudstones.
A keynote will be given by Dr. Juergen Schieber (University of Indiana) in this session with the title:
"An Overview of Experimental Mudstone Sedimentology—Results of Experiments and Applications to the Rock Record"
The session is supported by the Clay Minerals Group of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
Students presenting papers in this session can apply for travel bursaries via the website of the society:
Deadline for receipt of abstracts is June 3, 2013.
For more information, abstract submission (and guidelines), and for registration, please visit the website of the meeting:
